When I first stepped into Anchored, I was cynical. I wasn't sure if it was for me. I didn't want it to be another crossfit gym because that wasn't what I was looking for. I wanted to be strong and fit but was scared to look bulky (if only it were that easy) because I was fixated on being skinny. I was hesitant because I wasn't sure if the gym would live up to its mission statement. However, after the first introduction and trial class, I knew this was for me. Steve is an excellent coach. He tailors the workouts for each individual, depending on their goals. If I had any questions, he would take the time to answer my questions. Whether it's about exercise or dieting, he is always ready to help. I came in with very little knowledge of lifting. Steve guided me through the exercises, explaining and educating me on different movements in depth. Along the way, I've had the pleasure of working with different coaches, receiving feedback, helping me with mobility and muscle activation exercises to improve my lifts and be injury free. I've also met wonderful members who have encouraged me to continue to progress.
All I did before was cardio, actually, a lot of it but I was still skinny fat. I was slim but had flubber in areas that I wished would go away. No matter how much cardio I did, I just couldn't achieve the tight and tone look. I came to Anchored for aesthetic reasons. However, it's no longer about that. Fitness and lifting have become a lifestyle, a part of me.I came to the gym at 100lbs with very little knowledge of weight training. I could barely back squat an empty barbell. Now, at 105lbs, I can backsquat 170lbs, deadlift 240lbs, rep out pull ups and dips. I was never able to do any of that before but now I can, plus more. I am embracing the strength I never knew I had in me.
Not only am I embracing my strength but also my body. Body image is a sensitive topic but I'm happier now than I was back in my cardio days. I stopped worrying about my weight, stopped obsessing over the numbers on the scale and I don't crucify myself up if I indulge in delicious food. I look forward to coming to the gym and working out. I don't have to think about it, it's become that integrated in my life. :)
